Counselor’s Perspective

Jan 11, 2019

Growing up I never attended a summer camp just a some sport clinics. So getting a job at a summer camp in Melville was a new experience for me. I was not sure what to expect. Camp W has so many different activities and so many special events that I knew I was in for eventful summer. I was hired as a group counselor for 1st grade girls. Some girls in my group loved sports and others were into arts & crafts and other non-athletic activities. This gave me a challenge during my day, but we made it work so everybody was so happy.

The camp motto “Where Friendships Are Made” has been proven multiple times to be true. Friendship is found in all corners of camp. One reason I love being a counselor at Camp W is because I am able to form a friendship with all of the campers. Knowing that my campers have a feeling of friendship between us helps make the day a hundred times better. Being able to joke around and play games with the campers helps bring a smile to my face. However, the friendships that are hidden at camp are the ones within the staff. Working at Camp W I have met some of the most amazing people and created the most amazing friendships. These friendships help make the summer that much more amazing. The energy between the counselors spreads to the campers. Happy campers = happy counselors. But friendship doesn’t end with just the staff. Evan has created an environment where everyone is accepted. Having a boss that can put a smile on my face even when I’m a little grumpy is the best thing for a camp. The happy energy starts from the top and moves its way down to the campers.
